These words, spoken at the council of Nicaea by a Monk who had been blinded
and crippled by the Roman emperor Diocletian, resonated with me 1700 years later as I was reading on the history of the Bible. We live our faith through our hearts. To me, it meant that we live our faith by being open to opportunities to use the talents and abilities given to us in a positive way. This is why I’m running as a candidate for the Calgary Separate School District.
I have been married for 28 years
and our Catholic faith has always
been very important to my wife
Mary Anne and I. We were both
educated in the Catholic school
system; Mary Anne in Edmonton,
and myself, in NW Calgary. Our
four daughters were also educated in the Calgary Separate School system; we wanted them to experience the Catholic faith while receiving their education.
Being an involved parent, I helped
start the Hampton’s soccer program in 1999. I was President, from 1999 to 2012, for both the recreational and competitive programs, where we had kids from ages 4 to 18 participating. In 2012, we collaborated with surrounding neighborhoods to form a new club,Calgary North side Soccer, of which I am on the board of directors. During this period I was privileged to coach, or assistant coach over 40 teams. I was honored to receive theCalgary Minor Soccer Association Award of Merit for 2013.
In addition to my volunteer efforts with “Inn from the Cold” at my parish, I am committed to working with Canadian Blood Services. I began donating blood in 1984 and right now I’m sitting at 73 donations.
During the day I am President of Statcom Ltd., a Calgary based seismic data processing company. I am very active in my professional community and, in 2008,was elected as a director of the Canadian Society of Exploration Geophysicists. I participate in the Geophysical Society’s outreach efforts to engage junior and senior high students in the sciences by way of field demonstrations, hands on science exhibits, and science lectures by well known guest speakers. Working with the students and teachers in this way has been very rewarding.
Being a Trustee of the Calgary Separate School District is an extension of how I can use my abilities to live my Catholic faith. I will use my energy and enthusiasm, plus the experience I have gained running youth focused programs, being on various boards of directors and running a company, to be a strong advocate for families and students in the Calgary Separate School District.
